Lavender’s blue, dilly dilly, lavender’s green,
When I am king, dilly, dilly, you shall be queen.
Who told you so, dilly, dilly, who told you so?’
Twas my own heart, dilly, dilly, that told me so.
Call up your men, dilly, dilly, set them to work
Some to the plow, dilly, dilly, some to the fork,
Some to make hay, dilly, dilly, some to cut corn,
While you and I, dilly, dilly, keep ourselves warm.
.
Lavender’s green, dilly, dilly, Lavender’s blue,
If you love me, dilly, dilly, I will love you.
Let the birds sing, dilly, dilly, And the lambs play;
We shall be safe, dilly, dilly, out of harm’s way.
.
I love to dance, dilly, dilly, I love to sing;
When I am queen, dilly, dilly, You’ll be my king.
Who told me so, dilly, dilly, Who told me so?
I told myself, dilly, dilly, I told me so.
Lavender Blue – An English Folk Song
Lovely, lovely, Claire! I haven’t seen the Love in the Mist for ages – we used to have it growing wild in our front garden, and it was my fave. Must ask Pete if we can get more seeds.. 🙂
It’s a pretty flower, but does self-seed outrageously, I just pull handfulls out when it get’s a bit too much !
I’ve just asked Pete, and he said, “we STILL can’t get rid of those from when we planted them 20 years ago. They’re a pest!”. So I guess I’m not getting any more seed.. 😉
damn and blast!! One man’s weed is another woman’s flower 🙂 It’s all in the definition!
How lovely, will be haumming that all day. Didn´t know all the verses….and those photos are so beautiful. Mother Nature does create the most amazing colours doesn´t she?!
No I didn’t know the verses either, just the main refrain. and yes nature does give us a feast for the eyes!
I used to hang with the artist Salvatore Dali’s brother, Dilly Dali.
🙂 Don’t dilly dali on the way…… 😉
I’ve been growing Love in the Mist for years. The first year, Mr Misk wanted to pull it up because he said it was a “weed” — I’ve managed to incorporate wild cornflowers into the border this year, too. Lots of blues!
I haven’t got any cornflowers this year, such a shame, but I did pick up a packet when I visited Charleston the other week. The mix of blues sounds “dreamy”.
And my OH doesn’t particualrly like it for the same reasons, so we don’t have it in the garden but the allotment – that’s MINE 🙂
Cathy posted the first verse of this a few weeks ago…I always hear it in Burl Ives’ gravelly voice, like a record I had when I was a child 😀
Oh! I found some Nigella seeds last week! Will be staring them in flats this week, and hoping for a long, gentle fall season so the Little One can play with the seedheads…
I’ve discovered Cathy’s blog today, from a link on yours – gorgeous! A lovely idea for Angel, do you have sunflowers too ?
Ah, sunflowers…the rabbits’ OTHER favorite food. Not this year. Lots of nasturtiums and marigolds, though. 🙂
Oops sorry to remind you of your loss!
The lavender in my garden is taking ages to flower – it was planted in the garden before we bought the house and they must be a different variety because your flowers are a much darker hue than ours.
Noodle I have a few different lavenders on my plot, this one is earlier than the others, but everything is late this year!!
I love Love in the mist! I always give a packet of seeds to my wedding couples! Hope you are having a good day 🙂
Had an ok day – a quiet day in recovery after a very hectic weekend!
Hi there! So you have Nigella among your lavender too! I find the mix of blues and the flower shapes is lovely.
yes, I sowed some a few years back and being Nigella it happily self seeds so it is a wonderful accident. I wish I could claim design rights but I can’t – this one is nature at work 🙂
Lovely!
🙂 Mandy
You can never have too much lavender 🙂
I would love this, except my own lavender is MIA this year. Sigh…it is a lovely ditty though.
I lost a couple of lavenders this year too, and the French lavenders never seem to last very long either. Sigh….. too!
The blues in the lavender are simply scrumptious. I haven’t seen this exact mix, and I’m going to try to duplicate it, if possible! I loved singing along! Debra
Haphazard is the name of the game here Debra! I bought a few lavender plants ove rthe years, and try and line the tops of the beds by by central path with them, then scattered a few Love In he mist (nigella) and away we go! just as well I like the hapazardness of the planting arrangement 🙂 I’m sure the lavenders would do well in your garden
what lovely dreamy photos Claire and thanks for the sweet ditty to start the day!
Dreamy – I like that description. I like to sit and watch the bees on the lavender, they seem to love it just as much as humans 🙂
What a sweet rhyme! I had not heard it before. A perfect accompaniment to your lovely photos! Thank you!
It’s been recorded many times, and to be honest Cindy I only really knew the main line – “Lavender Blue Dilly dilly” and for some reason it popped into my head this morning and before I knew it I’d written this post 🙂 And thank you for the compliments !
So lovely, the song and the images. And I’m on a lavender kick now thanks to Sawsan and some dried culinary lavender a friend gave me…so this is timely. I’m singing…
I’ve seen some wonderful recipes with lavender, I really should get round to trying a few out and Sawsan made that delicious looking salad the other day – so clever and simple!
I need to find a shortbread with lavender recipe, that’s what I fancy trying 🙂
Me, too, to the shortbread idea, Claire…lemon and lavender. I tried Sawsan’s dressing and a variation on her salad, and it was absolutely awesome!
beautiful, beautiful lavender’s….dilly, dilly.
Thank you Teresa, I’m sure you would make something delightful and delicious with it!
Beautiful photos as always…and that was a favorite song of our kids when they were younger..sigh…nice memory.
A lovely memory to have, happy to have brought that one back !
I just cleared some space between some roses this morning and was considering putting some lavender in one of the “holes”. Well, you’ve convinced me! Great photos, Claire.
Oh lavender and roses would be a gorgeous combination John, and very happy to inspire!
WOW! What a beautiful post… Thank you dear Claire, reminded me my England days… I love lavender flowers… Love, nia
Thank you Nia, lovely to remind you of happy days here!
So beautiful- love lavender and the blues! I especially like this post, because I sing this to my toddler 🙂
It has a nice rythm and lilt to the tune, so lucky toddler 🙂
Beautiful photo – loving your photos:)
Many thanks !
a song from childhood, yet for me those delicate blue and purple flowers are part of adult life …and now I can picture a little golden book with songs and music that sat on my childhood piano …thanks claire 🙂
A golden book of songs and music, a lovely memory to share, thank you 🙂
This just made my day (and it didn’t start out that great!)! It was fun, cheery and I adore lavender and that song!! xo
Well it sound slike the day improved, so it’s a pleasure to help 🙂 I bet you could create something of so tasty and beautiful with it!
😀
A beautiful piece to represent a beautiful flower – way to go my friend 😀
Cheers

Oh, you clever girl…I love this! I have lots of lavender blues in my garden right now.
so pretty!!!
Claire. if only contemporary poetry was as full of love and nostalgia, I might read more. Thank you for the delightful post.
I love Nigella, would love to have it here, but it likes more sun than we have. I have never seen so many verses to “Lavender’s Blue” before.
